Douglas County farm ground is productive and heavily tiled, and around Tuscola the systems are old enough that nobody has a map. When a line fails the first job is finding it, and that's most of what we're hired for on tile out here.
The work runs on both the Amish and English sides of the county. Common failures: clay mains collapsed at a joint, HDPE crushed where a lane crosses it, surface intakes packed shut, and outlets lost when a ditch got cleaned or a fence row pushed out. Where a single wet pocket is the entire problem we'll trench one targeted line to a good outlet instead of touching the rest of the field.
Almost no Douglas County system comes with a drawing, so locating the failure is the first half of the job and usually the longer half. We start where the water actually stands, walk it back toward the outlet, and open test holes at the joints and the crossings — a lane, a waterway, a fence row push-out — because that is where clay lets go and where HDPE gets crushed. Once the failed section is exposed we cut it out, tie new pipe back into solid tile, and backfill so the trench does not become the next low spot.
A lost outlet fails a whole system from the far end, and out here it is as common a cause as a broken main. If the ditch got cleaned, the bank sloughed, or the end section is buried and silted shut, the repair is at the ditch, not in the middle of the field. Surface intakes are the other repeat offender — packed with trash and residue until the low spot ponds every spring. Both get rebuilt so there is something solid to see the water leave from.
