Grain bin removal and silo demolition are two different jobs on the same farmstead. A steel bin comes apart into recoverable metal and the scrap offsets part of the cost. A concrete stave silo has no scrap upside — it's heavy, dusty disposal plus a base and footing underneath. Height, diameter, access, and how far the steel and the debris have to haul do the rest. Out here you can't drive a mile without passing an old grain setup that's seen its last harvest — a rusted-out bin, a leaning concrete stave silo, a row of bins around a farmstead nobody farms anymore. Finding somebody who will actually take one down is the first hurdle: it's not a job most demolition companies near you will touch, and it is one we do. When folks call to ask what it runs, the answer is the one I always give: the honest answer is it depends — and a flat number off a website without seeing the bin is a guess.
But grain bin and silo work has one wrinkle most demolition doesn't, and it works in your favor: scrap steel. Here's what actually moves the cost of grain bin removal in central Illinois, and how the scrap offset fits in.
1. Size — Diameter and Height
A small backyard bin and a tall commercial bin are very different jobs. Diameter and height decide how much steel is up there, how much reach the machine needs, and how it has to come down safely. What we're pricing is how much material comes down, gets processed, and gets moved — and a big bin holds a lot more steel, and a lot more scrap value, than a little one.
2. Grain Bin Removal vs. Silo Demolition — Steel or Concrete
This is the biggest fork in the road, because it decides whether scrap helps you at all. Grain bin removal is mostly a steel job. Silo demolition, when it's an old concrete stave silo, is a concrete job — and the two price nothing alike.
- Steel grain bins come apart into recoverable metal. The roof, walls, and any steel floor and framing are scrap, and that's where the offset comes from.
- Concrete stave silos are a different animal — heavy, dusty work with no scrap upside, and the staves and base have to be broken down and hauled.
- Mixed setups — a steel bin with a concrete base, dryers, augers, and leg systems — get scoped piece by piece, because some parts are scrap and some are disposal.
Silo Demolition By Type — Which Ones Are Hard
“Silo” covers four different buildings that come down four different ways, and the type decides the method before anything else does. Ranked easiest to hardest as we actually run into them in central Illinois:
- Wood stave silo — the rare survivor, and usually the easy one. Curved wood staves in steel hoops, and by the time we see one the wood has been weathering for fifty years. It comes down fast. All of it is disposal; none of it is scrap.
- Glass-lined steel silo (a Harvestore or similar) — bolted steel sheet with a fused glass lining, usually blue. The steel is recoverable, so this is the one silo type where the scrap side is real. What slows it is that it is a sealed, bolted structure with an unloader in the bottom, so it is a deliberate teardown rather than a push.
- Concrete stave silo — far and away the most common one still standing on Illinois farms. Precast curved staves held in compression by steel hoops, which means the hoops are doing the work and the structure is only as stable as they are. It comes down in courses, or gets laid over in one piece where there is room to drop it. The hoops are the only steel on it; the staves and the base are weight to haul.
- Poured concrete silo — cast in place as one monolithic wall, no hoops and no seams to work with. This is the hardest of the four. There is nothing to unwrap, so it has to be broken, and the rubble is the heaviest haul in the group.
Two things apply to all four and they are the reason a silo is not a bin. An old silo is structurally unpredictable — a stave silo that has lost hoop tension can be holding itself up on habit, and that governs how it gets approached and where people stand. And nobody goes inside one. A silo is a confined space with a real oxygen hazard, and there is no reason to enter a building we are about to take down.

3. The Scrap-Steel Offset — Honestly
Here's the part people most want to hear about, so let me be straight. A steel grain bin is a serious amount of metal, and clean steel that separates well has scrap value. That value offsets part of the removal cost — sometimes a meaningful part on a big, sound bin.
4. The Base and Foundation
Bins sit on an anchored concrete pad or ring footing, and silos sit on a heavy base. Whether that comes out is its own decision and its own line item. If you're returning the ground to field, sometimes a partial removal and clean backfill is enough. If you're rebuilding on the spot, it usually all comes out. Either way the concrete and footing removal is priced separately so you can decide.
5. Access and Haul Distance
Farmstead logistics matter as much here as anywhere.
- Access. Can we get equipment and trucks right up to the bin, or is it crowded in among other buildings, augers, and power lines? Tight quarters slow careful work.
- Haul distance. Steel goes to the scrap yard and disposal goes to the landfill — two different destinations, and out in the country both can be a drive. That truck time and any tipping fees stack up.
- What's around it. A bin standing clear is simpler than one tucked next to a barn, a dryer, or the home place. The closer the surroundings, the more careful the takedown.
