Job Story — A Pond You Couldn't See Anymore

Cattails had taken the whole thing. We worked it from the bank with the Komatsu, pulled the root mat and the muck under it, and gave the owner his water back.

A Pond Doesn't Fill In Overnight โ€” It Grows Shut

Drive past this place in August and you'd have called it a slough, not a pond. Cattails wall to wall, willow coming up through the middle of it, and one thin strip of open water left at the far end.

The owner had been watching it close up on him for years. That's how it usually goes. A pond doesn't silt in dramatically โ€” the edges get shallow, cattails find that shallow shelf and root into it, the root mat traps more sediment, and every season the ring of reeds pushes a little further toward the middle. Give it long enough and the open water is gone entirely.

The cattails aren't the disease, they're the symptom. They grow where it's shallow. So pulling the tops off does nothing โ€” mow them, spray them, burn them, and they're back next summer because the shelf they're rooted in is still there. The only fix that lasts is taking out the root mat and the muck underneath it, and getting real depth back at the edge.

This one sits outside Urbana, in Champaign County, roughly fifty feet bank to bank. We brought the Komatsu PC150 in and set up on the bank rather than in the basin โ€” with that reach we could work the edges without ever putting the machine where it could get stuck. The bucket goes out past the reeds, gets under the mat, and rolls it back out onto the bank in one piece. Under the mat is the muck it had been collecting, and that comes out behind it.

The spoil comes out saturated and it's heavy, so it gets windrowed up on the bank to drain rather than loaded wet. Rehandling it dry, a day or two later, is far less work than fighting it soaked.

By the end of the day the reed line was off the near half and there was open water where there had been a hayfield that morning. The last photos in the gallery are the same pond from the same bank.

If your pond is doing this, the honest advice is don't wait. Every season you leave it, the ring gets wider, the shelf gets bigger, and there's more mat and more muck to pull when you finally do it. A pond caught early is a short job. A pond that's grown completely shut is a long one.

Pond Cleanout Questions

How much does a pond cleanout cost?

It depends on how much material has to come out and where it goes. A pond that's grown shut with cattails and a foot of muck is a different job than one that's silted in three feet deep. We walk it, probe the muck, and put a real number on paper after we've seen it โ€” the visit is free. Central Illinois, 60-mile radius from Mattoon.

Do you have to drain the pond first?

Usually yes. We work these dry โ€” the pond is drawn down or pumped off, the bottom is allowed to firm up, and then the machine works off solid ground. Dry cleanout gets a clean bottom and lets us reshape the banks and re-establish depth while we're in there.

How long does a pond cleanout take?

Most farm ponds this size run a few days to a week of machine time once the water is off. Drawdown and drying time is the variable โ€” that's weather, not machine hours.

What do you do with the material you take out?

It gets placed on site wherever it's useful โ€” spread and shaped, built into the bank, or stockpiled to dry and then leveled. Hauling it off costs more and usually isn't necessary on farm ground.

Can you make the pond deeper while you're in there?

Yes. Once it's dry and the machine is on the bottom, re-establishing depth is the same operation as taking the muck out. It's the cheapest time you'll ever have to add depth to an existing pond.
