Every pond conversation starts the same way: "what's a pond run me?" It's a fair question and it deserves a real answer, so here's the honest one — a pond is not priced by the acre, and the surface acres are one of the weaker predictors on the list.
What actually decides a pond number is how many cubic yards have to move, whether the ground will hold water once you've moved them, and how much structure the dam needs to be safe. Two one-acre ponds three miles apart can land a long way from each other on all three counts, and both contractors quoting them can be telling you the truth.
This post walks the seven things that move it. None of them is a secret, and most of them you can size up yourself standing in the field before anybody shows up with a machine. What Drives The Cost Of A Pond — The Short List
Seven things, in roughly the order they move the number:
- Dirt volume — how many cubic yards actually come out, which is driven more by depth than by surface area.
- Whether the soil seals — good tight clay is the cheap version. Sand seams or a gravel lens mean a core trench, test pits, and sometimes clay hauled in.
- The dam — its height, its length, and the keyway it has to be tied into. On a lot of sites the dam is the job.
- Two spillways — a principal outlet and an emergency spillway sized to the whole watershed, not the pretty-day flow.
- Where the spoil goes — spread and shaped on site is fast; loaded and hauled off is truck hours.
- What's on the footprint — open pasture is one thing, timber and stumps are another.
- Access — whether a loaded truck and a lowboy can get to the spot without a new lane.

1. Dirt Volume — And Why Depth Beats Acres
The single biggest input is cubic yards moved, and the thing people consistently get wrong is that depth drives volume harder than surface area does. Going from ten feet to fourteen at the deep end doesn't just deepen the middle — it pulls the whole basin down, and it lengthens every side slope on the way. That's why a smaller pond dug deep for fish can outrun a bigger, shallower one.
It's also why per-acre pond math falls apart. An acre of surface tells you almost nothing about the yardage under it, and yardage is what the machine is actually paid to move.
2. Whether Your Soil Will Hold Water
This is the factor that can move a pond number further than going up a whole size class. Our ponds are clay-lined and runoff-fed — the basin is sealed by the native clay it's cut into, and it fills from the watershed above it.
Across most of Coles, Cumberland, Douglas and Moultrie counties the heavy till clay does that job on its own, and that's the inexpensive version: cut it, key the dam into the same clay, and the ground seals itself. But that clay is not everywhere. Sandier draws along the Embarras and the Kaskaskia, or a gravel lens sitting two feet down where nobody expected it, mean test pits before design, a core trench cut deeper, and more working and compaction to get the basin tight — and sometimes they mean the spot won't hold a pond at all. Same size pond, very different job.
We read that before anything is staked, because finding it after the dig is the expensive way to learn it.
3. The Dam — Usually The Real Cost, Not The Hole
On an embankment pond the dam is the structure, and the structure is where the money is. Its height and length set how much select clay has to be placed and compacted, and it all goes in in thin lifts with a roller — not pushed up in one heap, which is how dams fail.
Under it runs the core trench, also called the keyway — a trench cut down through the loose surface material into tight clay and backfilled with compacted clay, so water can't simply travel underneath the dam you just built. It's invisible when the job is done and it's the part that decides whether the pond is still holding in twenty years. We wrote up the whole sequence in how a pond dam and spillway are built.
A taller dam also starts pulling in regulatory questions in Illinois, and those are height-and-storage driven rather than acreage driven. It's another reason two ponds of the same surface size aren't the same project.
4. Two Spillways, Not One
Every pond that's built to last has two ways to let water out: a principal spillway, usually a pipe through the dam that carries the everyday flow and holds the normal pool where you want it, and an emergency spillway, a wide shallow cut around the end of the dam that only ever runs in a big storm.
The emergency spillway is sized to the watershed above the pond, not to the pond. That's the part that surprises people: a small pond at the bottom of a big drainage area needs a bigger emergency spillway than a large pond catching very little ground. Get it wrong and the storm takes the dam out. It's cheap to build correctly on the first pass and expensive to add later.
5. Where The Spoil Goes
Every yard that comes out of the basin has to end up somewhere. If there's room to spread and shape it on site — into the dam, into a pad, into a berm, or just feathered out across a field so it farms — that's fast and it's the cheap answer. If the spoil has to be loaded and hauled off, that's truck hours on top of machine hours, and haul distance to a place that will take it becomes part of your number.
Worth thinking about before we walk it: if you've got somewhere on the property that could use fill, say so. It's one of the few places on a pond job where a landowner can genuinely take cost out.
6. What's Growing On The Footprint
An open pasture site is the clean version. A wooded draw is a land clearing job that happens before the pond job starts — trees down, brush handled, and stumps and root balls pulled out of the footprint and the dam line, because organic material buried in a dam is a future leak path. Timber can add as much time as the dig on a bad site, and it's the item most often missing from a number somebody quoted over the phone.
7. Access
A pond is built with heavy iron that has to get there. A dozer and an excavator arrive on a lowboy, and that lowboy needs a lane that will carry it and a place to turn around. If spoil is leaving, loaded tandems need the same. On some farms that's a non-issue; on others the honest first line item is building or armoring the access before a machine ever reaches the spot. It's rarely the biggest number on the sheet, but it's the one most likely to be a surprise.
Why Size Alone Won't Tell You The Number
Notice what's not on the list: the acreage by itself. Size matters — it's the input to the yardage — but it sits behind depth, behind soil, and behind the dam. That's the whole reason a national dollars-per-acre figure is useless on your ground, and why the same crew can quote two one-acre ponds very differently in the same week without either number being wrong.

What To Have Ready Before You Call
- Where you want it. Even a rough pin on a map. The spot decides the watershed, the dam, and half the cost drivers above.
- What it's for. Fishing, livestock, irrigation, or looks — that sets the depth, and depth sets the dirt.
- What's above it. How much ground drains toward the spot, and whether any of it is a road, a feedlot, or a neighbor's field.
- What's on it now. Timber, brush, an old fence line, a tile line you know runs through there.
- Whether you want the dirt. Somewhere on the place that could use fill can take real cost out of the job.
